TyposThes
TyposThes, one of Northern Greece’s most established news platforms, has long been a source of information for Thessaloniki and the wider region. With a strong editorial presence and a diverse content mix, the platform continues to evolve alongside the changing habits and expectations of its audience.
We redesigned and redeveloped TyposThes with a broader goal than simply giving the website a new look: to evolve a traditional news platform into a more engaging, interactive digital destination, built around content discovery, editorial flexibility, and audience participation.

One of the primary goals of the redesign was to make it easier for users to discover more content without compromising the editorial hierarchy that a news platform requires.
The new homepage introduces a more modular structure, giving the editorial team greater freedom to build different content flows, highlight important stories, and create stronger relationships between sections and topics. The result is a richer browsing experience that encourages users to move beyond the leading stories and explore more of the platform.
Discovering Thessaloniki through the City Guide
A major addition to the new TyposThes is the City Guide, a dedicated destination designed around life in Thessaloniki.
The City Guide brings together news and content focused on what is happening across the city, creating a distinct space for readers looking to discover more about Thessaloniki beyond the daily news cycle.
Cinema is an important part of this experience. A dedicated cinema section gives users access to current movie listings and screening schedules, making it possible to explore what is playing and where directly through TyposThes.
By combining local content with practical information, the City Guide extends the role of TyposThes beyond news consumption. It creates another reason for readers to return to the platform as part of their everyday life in the city, while opening up new possibilities for content and services around Thessaloniki.
From news consumption to participation
Audience engagement was another central part of the project. Rather than treating TyposThes purely as a one-way publishing platform, we introduced features that give readers more opportunities to interact with both the content and the editorial team.
These include:
- Polls and quizzes, creating opportunities for participation and immediate audience feedback.
- In-article snippets, giving editors additional ways to structure and enrich stories.
- Citizen reports and complaints, allowing readers to submit issues and stories that may be selected for publication.
- A dedicated games section, introducing a lighter, more entertaining layer to the overall experience.
Together, these features create a more participatory relationship between TyposThes and its audience while giving the editorial team new formats through which to engage readers.
Built for a modern newsroom
Behind the new experience is a content management system designed to give the editorial team greater control and flexibility.
The new structure makes it easier to curate the homepage, prioritize stories, manage different content verticals, and work with a wider range of editorial formats. This flexibility was an important part of the project: the platform needed not only to support what TyposThes publishes today, but also to make it easier to introduce new ideas and formats over time.
From Drupal 8 to Drupal 11
The redevelopment also included a major technological upgrade, migrating TyposThes from Drupal 8 to Drupal 11.
Beyond bringing the platform onto a modern and actively supported Drupal foundation, the migration provided the opportunity to rethink the underlying architecture rather than simply reproduce the previous website on a newer version.
The new foundation improves security, maintainability, performance, and scalability while making future development significantly more flexible. It also provides the editorial team with a more modern content management experience, better suited to the pace and complexity of digital publishing.
With Drupal 11 at its core, TyposThes now has a platform that can continue evolving as its editorial and product needs change.
A refreshed digital identity
The redesign is completed by a refreshed visual language that gives TyposThes a cleaner and more contemporary presence while preserving the familiarity of an established news brand.
Typography, spacing, content hierarchy, and interface elements were reconsidered to improve readability and make content easier to navigate across the platform. A fully responsive approach ensures that the experience remains consistent across desktop, tablet, and mobile - particularly important for a news platform where a significant part of everyday consumption happens on smaller screens.
The result is not simply a redesigned website, but a more flexible publishing platform: one that gives the TyposThes editorial team more ways to tell stories, gives readers more ways to discover and interact with content, and provides the technological foundation for what comes next.
